Trump abandons peace talks, tells Netanyahu to “finish it”. Hamas says it is “surprised”. Macron recognizes the Palestinian state. Mass starvation and botched aid have made headlines for weeks. Under intense international pressure, Israel announces a pause each day for aid transport. Volunteering doctors warn that children who do not die from starvation will suffer from life-long ailments.

No peace should be abandoned. To abandon a peace means we have no patience for the complex untangling, the purpose-filled redirection, the emotional discipline of having the life of the children be more important than territory, or creed, or flag, or spoils, political gain, power, or even righteous honor. No war ends war. During war, the combined efforts of all of the aid institutions, well-intended or corrupt, adept or inept, cannot keep up with the pace of destruction. The purpose of war is to destroy. Thus, only creation can replace war. Peace will be illusive and transitory until that is so. Nonetheless, for the possibility of there being children’s children’s children to reverse the tide, no peace should be abandoned.
