According to the study published Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change, “for every 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit of warming, added sugar consumption in US households increased by 0.7 grams per person per day, the researchers found, with a marked escalation as temperatures hit between 68 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Hotter weather makes bodies lose more water, causing people to crave hydration and cooling. For many in the US that means reaching for cold, sweet products like sodas and ice cream.” Less advantaged folx, already larger consumers of sugar (and salt) plentiful in lower cost prepared foods, spend less time in air-conditioned spaces and are therefore more susceptible to craving cold, sweet products. In other news, escalation (see #88) ratchets with Russian drones flying into Poland’s airspace, triggering the launch of NATO and Polish aircraft.

The last time I spoke of climate change and ice cream together was in post #37, in which was advised: “enjoy responsibly”. Little did I know! There are the things we are driven to do, not knowing why. Receiving information, we can: (a) ignore; (b) disbelieve; (c) be pissed; (d) blame “X”; (e) enjoy the excuse to over-consume; (f) over-compensate by cutting all sugar; (g) judge people who do any of the above; or (h) enjoy responsibly. Your choice.
