“The D.C. flag — three red stars atop two red bars on a white background — has been flying off the shelves of area stores ever since Trump ordered a federal takeover of law enforcement in the District on Aug. 11. In a matter of days, the banner became one of the hottest — and hardest to get — ways for locals to express anger with the administration and pride in their city.”

Did you know that Washington, D.C. (District of Columbia) has its own flag? Well, of course, it does! Columbia is an ‘ancient’ name, a Latin-derived name for this country at the time of the colonies (circa 1770s). It is, according to the ancient source Wikipedia, a “female* national personification”. As is the Statue of Liberty (1886). As is Lady Justice (ancient Greek), holding the balancing scales of justice. Will liberty, justice, compassion with, care of… will these female personifications of governance fall as anachronisms, forced out by acts and displays of power, arms, force, capture, detention, removal? The people of Washington, D.C., who have no rights as state citizens but are nonetheless citizens of the country known as the United States… the people of D.C. fly the flag and say yes to becoming the people+place of our hopes, rather than dictating by rule of violence.  (*Remember, biological females have more guts. See post #25.)
