“Ned the lefty snail has a 1 in 40,000 shot at a mate. Cue a national search.”(News headline) Most snails’ shells coil right. If they coil left, as occurs in 1 in 40,000 snails, then they will be able to reproduce only if they meet up with another snail that coils left. (… an anatomy thing involving whether one set of equipment can reach another set of equipment) To increase possibilities, a successful match generally requires human assistance. Folx across New Zealand are searching for potential mates for Ned. “The chance of finding a mate for Ned is 1 in 40,000, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worthwhile”. A similar search for a lefty in London yielded two potential mates
When the world slides sideways, it can feel like we have about a 1 in 40,000 chance of making it to the other side well and thriving. No problem! That equates to a bit over 205,000 determined, persistent, aspirational, fiercely loving, creative, hard-working, humble and proud folx desirous of an interdependently thriving future for our descendants, in a world of 8.2 billion folx. Betcha we are more than that. We just need to find each other.
