Canada joined announcements by the U.K., France, and Malta on plans to recognize Palestine in September to support the two-state option. (September is the beginning of the regular session of the United Nations. The timing is diplomacy’s way of saying that their country’s decision is part of a multi-national action.) Egypt, Qatar, Saudia Arabia, Jordan, and Turkey (Arab and Muslim states) called for the disbandment and surrender of weapons by Hamas. Israeli rights groups B’tselem and Physicians for Human Rights Israel accuse their government of genocide. “We are doing it with a heavy heart.” In a Gallup poll, just 32% of US adults support Israel’s military actions in Gaza — a record low since October 7, 2023, in a strong partisan split: Republicans support Israel’s military actions by 71%, Democrats by 8%, Independents by 25%. The younger generation is not split. Just 9% of those age 18-34 of all or no political parties support the ongoing war. Trump blasts Canada’s decision and says maybe there won’t be a trade deal.

World leaders are beginning to align, mostly because their people have already aligned. Will U.S. leaders follow the lead? Israel and Hamas have demonstrated a willingness to amass civilian casualties, execute total destruction of homes and infrastructure and essential facilities, withhold aid and food. Whether a price to be extracted or a cruel strategy to win at all costs, this has been laid bare for many to see and feel. A humanity defining moment.
