Headline: “On North Carolina’s Rivers and Streams, the Cleanup of Helene’s Fury Seems Never-ending”.  One year since Hurricane Helene hit, killing 250 folx, causing $80 billion in damage, and altered the courses of streams and rivers, debris is still being pulled out of waterways. Headline: “In Front of Drowning Nations, Trump Calls Climate Change a ‘Con Job’” In his remarks to the United Nations, the U.S. President derided “stupid predictions” and the “green scam”. In the audience were delegates from nations experiencing increasing floods, coastal inundations, and sea level rise.

Denying that climate changes from human actions does not stop the climate from changing. Rulers do whatever they wish… much like the planet. Leaders at the least deal with the circumstances arising from climate change, plan for the next storm, deal with the current one, clean up after the last. Leaders don’t ignore, excuse, or deny human suffering, destruction of place and beings. Some rulers at least realize that collateral damage piles up, even in the largest countries in the world. The accumulation of collateral damage of all peoples and places piles up for all peoples and places. This is the existential problem and therefore the work of the community of all communities.
