There is hidden news in the June jobs report. The top-line, unhidden, is that more jobs were added than expected. Less reported? Those seeking work are taking longer to find work, and the percentage rose among those who are unemployed for 27 weeks or longer. Folx worked fewer hours per week. Women are being edged out at a higher percentage, as are Black Americans. And wage growth has slowed. That is the unheralded and therefore hidden news. Also hidden are climate assessment reports, once counted on by the folx in local governments and businesses and insurance companies and… They are disappearing from federal websites and essentially defunded from being readily available or updated as assessments need to be. The One Big Beautiful Bill (characterized as otherwise by some) just passed the House and may be signed by the time you read this message. It contains many many many things because it is One Big Bill.
That which isn’t seen can’t be dealt with. Look under the hood! That which is seen helps us see things for what they are, not just what we hope they are, or hope they are not, or wish them to be. Some people understand that. Like the scientists and economic number crunchers, continuing to work whether they are legitimized or not, finding ways if they are pushed aside or fired. An article gets written from time to time, persisting even though unloved by the rulers’ nothing-to-see-here-rule. Scientific societies and assorted volunteers step in to keep the measurements and reporting going, going. That which is pushed aside and hidden does not need to hide or go away.
